Our Heritage

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church

Origins (AD 52)

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church traces its origins to AD 52, when St. Thomas the Apostle arrived on the Malabar Coast of Kerala and established one of the earliest Christian communities in India.

Syrian Heritage (AD 345)

The arrival of Thomas of Cana and a group of Christian families from the Middle East strengthened the church's Syriac traditions and liturgical heritage.

Coonan Cross Oath (1653)

The historic Coonan Cross Oath marked the community's resistance against foreign ecclesiastical control and affirmed its independent identity.

Reformation Movement

Led by Palakunnathu Abraham Malpan, the nineteenth-century reformation emphasized biblical teaching, worship in the Malayalam language, and spiritual renewal.

The Modern Church

Today the Mar Thoma Church is a global Christian community committed to worship, mission, education, social service, and ecumenical fellowship.
